In the press

Pieces written about the herd by the farming press over the years — farm profiles, export sales and industry comment. These were written by journalists, not by us; each one links out to the publication that ran it.

Looking for Oliver's own writing? That's on the articles page.

  1. Agriland by Breifne O'Brien Feature

Wagyu breeder flags concerns on low numbers of full-blood stock (opens in a new tab)

Oliver approached Agriland to warn that full-blood Wagyu numbers in Ireland are falling to the point of threatening future supply. Cites Australian Wagyu Association registration figures and argues the breed bonus here is too thin to sustain pedigree herds.

  2. Agriland by Breifne O'Brien Feature

Kildare breeder sells Wagyu consignment to Portugal (opens in a new tab)

Twenty registered females, two stock bulls, plus semen and embryos go to a buyer in Pombal after a Portuguese delegation visited Kilcullen. Includes the three-day road journey and notes on the bull Ohanasaki Tucker.

  3. Irish Independent (Farming) by Niall Hurson Feature

'Why whinge about factory quotes when all you have to do is change your bull?' (opens in a new tab)

A profile of the Kilcullen herd, taking in the enterprises Oliver tried before Wagyu and why he came to see the breed as the only way to stay in suckler farming and still pay the bills. Also covers the full-blood cows run alongside crossbred recipients, and his argument that Wagyu suits the older or part-time farmer better than most alternatives.

  4. Agriland by Breifne O'Brien Feature

Beef Focus: 40-cow Wagyu breeder to host 'unique' reduction sale (opens in a new tab)

A farm visit ahead of what Oliver describes as the first sale of registered full-blood Wagyu cattle held in Ireland. Forty-four lots across heifers, bulls, steers, semen and embryos, with background on the 110-acre holding and the breeds that preceded Wagyu there.

  5. Wagyu International by Steve Bennet Directory

Wagyu around the World — Ireland (opens in a new tab)

A breeder directory entry rather than journalism. Sets out the herd's foundation genetics, names Ohanasaki Breda as the leading dam, and records results from the May 2022 reduction sale including the top bull and heifer prices.

  6. Agriland by Niall Claffey Feature

Beef focus: Irish-bred Wagyu stock bulls head for southwest Wales (opens in a new tab)

Six Ohanasaki bulls go to an 800-cow British Friesian herd in Carmarthenshire. Covers the embryo transfer programme on the Kildare farm and why the Welsh buyers switched away from Jersey genetics.

  7. Agriland by Niall Claffey Feature

Beef focus: Wagyu leads the way on a Co. Kildare beef enterprise (opens in a new tab)

Agriland's first visit to the Kilcullen farm. Traces the route from a Friesian dairy herd, through Belgian Blues, to the arrival of Australian Wagyu embryos in 2008 and the first calves the following spring.

  8. Irish Farmers Journal by Shane Murphy Feature

"Why Wagyu? Because I like money!" — herd profile: Ohanasaki Wagyu (opens in a new tab)

The fullest profile of the herd anywhere. Covers the 2007 decision to import 51 Australian embryos at the cost of a new tractor, the poor first conception rate, why Oliver breeds on Australian EBV figures rather than looks, and early export sales to France, Spain and Scotland.

  9. Irish Farmers Journal (Video Hub) Video

Wagyu beef: Irish farmers learn from Australian experience (opens in a new tab)

Short video of the Australian Ambassador's visit to the Kilcullen farm, covering the embryo import and the sale of high-value beef. Runs 1:34. The page carries no date; the visit was April 2019.
